Outreach Programs

Faculty, staff, and students alike in the College of Social Work at Florida State University are continually working to make a direct impact at the national, state, and local levels through service and outreach programs. The following list includes the Outreach Programs run by the School of Social Work:

   • Institute for Family Violence Studies
The endowed Institute for Family Violence has been established within the College of Social Work to examine the effects of family violence across the life span for a wide range of populations. Recognizing the legacy of violence on the subsequent development of victim survivors, the institute is concerned with the contextual and developmental aspects of family violence. The institute maintains the ecological perspective of social work supporting analyses of societal institutions, policies, and practices that impact the incidence of interpersonal violence and trauma.

FSU Multidisciplinary Center
The Louise R. Goldhagen Regional Multidisciplinary Evaluation and Consulting Center is a university-based diagnostic and training center that serves preschool and school-aged children presenting complex academic, medical, emotional or behavioral problems in school programs.
The multidisciplinary team includes professionals from School, Counseling, and Clinical Psychology; Counseling Education and Social Work.  Consultation with professionals from FSU Communication Disorders and the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities is also available.

The Social Work internship program provides structured orientation and practice in
social work skills.  Each student receives individualized and group supervision where they
practice interviewing skills through role-playing and writing clinical reports.  Once competency is established, students are assigned cases for practical experience by conducting psychosocial assessments with caretakers of children referred to the Center.  Students are closely monitored during the interviews, utilizing one-way mirrors and given constructive feedback that assisted in developing professional skills.
