BSW PROGRAM
Welcome to the BSW Program site. Here at Florida State University our social work program dates back to 1949 when the School of Social Welfare was first established. Our baccalaureate program was one of the first programs in the country to be accredited by the Council on Social Work Education in 1974, and as Director of the program it is a pleasure to share with you my enthusiasm for our outstanding faculty, students and alumni which exemplify our proud tradition of excellence.
It is the goal of the baccalaureate program in social work at Florida State University to provide quality preparation for entry-level practitioners who will work with diverse client systems and problems. Our students are prepared to enhance human well-being with particular attention to the empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and/or living in poverty. This is undertaken with an understanding of our professional history, values and ethics, a respect for diversity, and a commitment to work to achieve social and economic justice.
The BSW program is offered at FSU's main Tallahassee campus and our Panama City campus. Both part-time and full-time programs of study are available, but most courses are offered during daytime hours. The curriculum sequence is structured, requiring approximately four semesters to complete all course requirements for the major and a minimum of 50 credit hours in social work is required for graduation: 38 hours of coursework and 12 hours of field instruction. Field instruction takes place in a 12-credit-hour field placement of 512 clock hours, which offers our student the unique opportunity to gain professional experience while under the supervision of a professional social worker in an agency setting.
Our social work graduates are working in every facet of community life—in schools, hospitals, mental health clinics, senior centers, elected office, private practices, prisons, military, corporations, and in numerous public and private agencies that serve individuals and families in need. Their education at the College of Social Work has prepared them to work in these challenging, yet rewarding settings. We are proud of their accomplishments and how well they represent our tradition of excellence. Join us in this important work!
